Resveratrol May Help You Ward off Age-Related Memory Decline
According to Futurity, a new study has shown that the resveratrol that makes red wine so good for your health may help you ward off age-related memory decline.
A study published recently in Scientific Reports illustrated that resveratrol apparently offered benefits in terms of memory, learning and mood function when tested on rats. As such experts believe that the compound could be used to treat patients with severe neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease.
What Happened When Resveratrol was tested on Rats?
Texas A&M University professor of molecular and cellular medicine Ashok K Shetty, who worked on the research, spoke out on its findings about the benefits of red wine. Shetty commented:
“They indicated that for the control rats who did not receive resveratrol, spatial learning ability was largely maintained but ability to make new spatial memories significantly declined between 22 and 25 months. By contrast, both spatial learning and memory improved in the resveratrol-treated rats.”
Shetty went on to say: “The study provides novel evidence that resveratrol treatment in late middle age can help improve memory and mood function in old age.”
