Chateau Margaux Releases ‘Wine of the 2015 Vintage’

At the Ideal Wine Company we like to take note of the latest standout wines. Famous Bordeaux-based wine maker Chateau Margaux has now released its latest vintage, which has been named the region’s ‘wine of the 2015 vintage’ by experts.

Standout Bordeaux vintage

Experts previously predicted that due to dry growing conditions, the 2015 Bordeaux vintage would be magnificent. Talking at the recently-held Bordeaux annual futures tasting, prominent oenologist Michel Rolland said that “[the 2015] is a great vintage with precise wines, better than any we’ve ever made… It has the power of the 2005s and… the body and sunny charm of the 2009s.”

It looks as though while 2015 Bordeaux wines in general will be magnificent, the year’s Chateau Margaux vintage will be even better. Every year, merchants name what they believe will be the region’s ‘wine of the vintage’ a.k.a. its best wine, in Liv-Ex’s en primeur survey. These experts awarded the current Chateau Margaux with the ‘wine of the 2015 vintage’ honour.

Product release

Industry news site The Drinks Business reports that the 2015 Chateau Margaux has now been launched. The wine’s opening price has been set at €384 per bottle ex-négociant, a 60% rise on the 2014’s opening price of €240 per bottle ex-négociant.

Here in a UK, a case of 2015 Chateaux Margaux will cost just more than £4,000, which Giles Cooper at fine wine and spirits merchant BI argues, is still value for money. Explaining his rationale, Cooper said: “It would have been ideal to get under £4,000 but it’s still 25% less than the 2010, 22% less than the 2009 and 18% less than the 2005 – for possibly the greatest Margaux ever made. We expect significant demand.”

Excellent investment

Max Lalondrelle, the Fine Wine Director at Berry Bros and Rudd, agreed with Cooper’s assessment. Explaining why, Lalondrelle commented: “I am not sure all the other first growths can command this kind of prices for 2015… but Margaux and the Margaux appellation has done very well this year so this should sell without too much problem.”

Meanwhile David Roberts MW, the Buying Director for Goedhuis, had nothing but praise for Corinne Mentzelopoulos, the woman who currently owns Chateau Margaux. Commenting, he said that she had “listened to the market and released one of the finest vintages of Château Margaux – the great Paul Pontallier’s last, and the 200th anniversary wine – at a very sensible and fair price. Stock will certainly be hard to come by and this is unquestionably one of the wines of the vintage.”
